How to Add a Table of Contents to a PDF
Long PDF documents are hard to navigate without a table of contents. Here is how to add clickable bookmarks and outlines to any PDF.
Step 1: Upload Your PDF
Drag and drop your PDF file into the upload area. The tool will analyze the document and show you all the pages.
Step 2: Create Your Outline Entries
Add bookmark entries for each section or chapter. You can:
- Create a new entry by selecting a page and typing a title
- Nest entries under parent headings for a hierarchical structure
- Edit or remove any entry you have already created
Step 3: Download the PDF with Outline
Click download to save your PDF with the new outline. When you open the file in any PDF reader, the bookmarks will appear in the navigation pane.
Why Your PDF Needs a Table of Contents
A PDF without an outline forces readers to scroll through pages looking for specific sections. Adding bookmarks makes navigation instant. This is especially useful for:
- Ebooks and manuals that are more than 10 pages long
- Reports and proposals that readers need to reference quickly
- Training materials and guides with multiple chapters
Common Questions About PDF Outlines
Will the outline work in all PDF readers?
Yes. The outline is embedded as standard PDF bookmarks that work in Adobe Acrobat, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and most PDF reader apps.
Can I create a multi level outline?
Yes. You can create parent and child entries. For example, Chapter 1 can have sub sections like 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 nested under it.
Do I need to add entries one by one?
For now, you add each entry manually. This gives you full control over the structure and naming of your outline.
Is there a limit on the number of outline entries?
No limit. You can add as many entries as you need for your document.
