How to Password Protect a PDF
Need to keep a PDF document private and prevent others from opening, printing, or editing it? Here is how to add password protection.
Step 1: Upload Your PDF
Drag and drop your PDF file into the upload area. You can also click to select a file from your computer.
Step 2: Set Your Passwords
You can set two types of passwords:
- User password: required to open and view the PDF
- Owner password: required to edit, print, or copy content
You can set both or just one. For maximum security, set both.
Step 3: Choose Restrictions (Optional)
Decide what actions to restrict:
- Prevent printing
- Prevent copying text and images
- Prevent editing
- Prevent adding comments
Step 4: Download Your Protected PDF
Click the protect button and download your password protected PDF. Test it by opening the file to make sure the password works.
Why Protect PDF Files
Sensitive documents like contracts, financial reports, and personal information should not be accessible to everyone. Password protection adds a layer of security that prevents unauthorized access.
Since everything runs in your browser, your original PDF and the password you set never leave your computer.
Common Questions About PDF Protection
Can I remove the password later?
Yes. You can use the same tool to upload the protected PDF, enter the owner password, and remove the protection.
What happens if I forget the password?
PDF encryption is strong. If you forget the password, there is no way to recover it. Keep your passwords in a safe place.
Is the encryption secure?
The tool uses standard PDF encryption that is widely supported and secure. The encryption happens in your browser, so your password is never sent anywhere.
Can I protect a PDF that is already password protected?
You need to remove the existing protection first, then add new protection with your own passwords.
